The Importance of Parenting Styles There are many different types of parenting styles in the world today. The way one chooses to raise their children, can play a very big role in a child’s behavior and success within the future. In 1967, a woman named Diana Baumrind contributed to the knowledge in socioemotional development by studying and researching parenting styles. She originally stated that there are four types of parenting styles; authoritarian, authoritative, permissive and neglectful. Each of the styles range according to the demandingness upon the children compared to the responsiveness to the children’s needs. This topic particularly intrigues me due to the fact that I am a mother and have to display one of these four parenting†¦show more content†¦They tended to be well rounded and self-reliable. It is thought to be the best type of parenting style due to the equal balance of discipline to affection. â€Å"Authoritative parents encourage a verbal gi ve-and-take, and explain the consequences of good and bad behavior† (Dewar, 2013). For example, if a child makes a mistake they correct them while taking the child’s feelings or point of view into consideration. â€Å"Authoritative parents want to encourage independence in their kids, but they also want to foster self-discipline, maturity, and a respect for others† (Dewar, 2013). It is commonly thought that the pattern in authoritative parenting is best for the development of a child. â€Å"Children who have been raised in authoritative homes score higher on a variety of measures of competence, social development, self-perceptions, and mental health than those raised in authoritarian, permissive, or neglectful homes† (Ballantine, 2001). â€Å"This is true not only in childhood, but also during adolescence, as evidenced by higher academic achievement and psychosocial development, and fewer behavioral problems† (Ballantine, 2001). Children who have a balanced lifestyle of authoritative parenting are more likely to be successful in school, work and among peers in the future. All of this results in a happy and healthy adult life.
